Dual Carriageway : 52 km

The Atlantic corridor will see the creation of a north-south axis covering the west coast of Ireland and taking in all the regional cities - Sligo, Galway, Limerick and Cork - upgraded to a minimum 2+2 dual carriageway standard. However, in the 2010 spending review, the part starting about 25 km north of Sligo was cancelled. This is acceptable in the short term, since Ballyshannon and Bundoran were bypassed in 2006 and Donegal town has had a bypass for a long time.

However, since County Donegal is a peripheral region, this is not acceptable in the long term. An online upgrade of the Ballyshannon and Bundoran bypass, and a new build for the rest, will be required. This will complete the connection of Donegal's road network to the rest of the Republic's.

JupiterKid from Ireland rates this scheme 6/10 and its alignment 7/10; and reckons the standard is about right.
"The N15 bewween Sligo town and Donegal town carries a surprisingly high amount of traffic given the region's relatively peripheral location, but when you consider that this route forms the only "land bridge" between Donegal and the rest of the Republic of Ireland it makes more sense. In my opinion the Bundoran/Ballyshannon bypass should have been built as DC - it is such a wide road as it is and an opportunity was clearly missed. However, an online upgrade should be possible here.

The section between Sligo town and Bundoran is poor and dangerous. This needs upgrading to either D2 or 2+2 as a matter of relative priority."

[Note: Since 2+2 is two-lane dual, by "D2" JupiterKid likely means S4 - four-lane undivided carriageway.]
