On the old N9, traffic levels grew slowly over the last 10 years to between 10 and 15,000 vpd. Carlow North was bypassed in 2008 by the M9 and halved immediately to 7,000.

By 2010 the whole of the rest of the route was replaced and the new M9 counters at the northern end posted numbers from 15-17k, though Mullinavat at the far end was counting barely 9,000.
