a weblog about girleens that travel. read of their adventures!

I know its a horrific spelling. Its niggling at me now with the small e but ya know just trying things out. Considering our options and ways of playing with the word for our new adventurous life and possible tattoo. We’re so maxing out with radicalness and such what not. We did our skydive at Lake Wanaka, which is over an hour from Queenstown. Did it from 9000 feet and got a dvd and photos too. In for a penny in for a couple of hundred pound. Sure ya only live once! (Been saying that a lot the last few weeks. We really are living it up here in NZ. Though methinks tonight is 2 minute noodle night. That’s possibly more to do with laziness than actually intent to save. However I digress…) We were all very calm going up. Though Lids and Fee did their dive first. Twas mental watching them careening outta the sky. Lids was shouting our names as she fell the last few feet to land. Ya would know she grew up in a manic house with the lungs on her! Fee made it all look so effortless. Same with Triona who went up in the plane with me. 4 of us jumped on our run. I was first and Triona was last. Tis is still so surreal looking back now. My tandem jumper Jeff was lovely. Real cool and collected. He didn’t make it sleazy like Lids and Fee experienced when hauling themselves up to get harnessed in the plane. The view was stunning as we flew up into position. We only had a 5 minute video to display the freefall position and then about 5 lines from Jeff as to what would happen when he’d tap me on the shoulder as we went down but it really was one of the safest and amazing things I’ve ever done. We sat at the edge of the plane and got our photo taken, which ya can see on Skydive Lake Wanaka’s website , just click on view my picture and choose 4th August and you’ll find us. They’re not very flattering though. I look somewhat like Monkey. Anyway then he just pushed off. Just like that. Gravity grabbed us and I was plummeting to the ground at between 180 and 200km per hour! Kinda took a second for my brain to kick into the the fact that I was no longer in the plane, which was a bit mad. Jeff turned us over once and spun us around a couple of times (side note on NZ, if they say a couple they mean 2 and only 2, taken a bit of getting used to as if someone says in Ireland that it costs a couple of Euro for something then you still need to clarify the actual price, here they say couple they mean couple as in 2, no more, no less, its an oddity), then the freefall was over and the parachute had hauled us back up and then we were gliding down taking in the breath taking scenery at our leisure. Saw Mt Cook and all from on high. Its still so mad to think its done. Another thing marked off my list! Its funny looking back at the photos. We all look like giant babies. Not sexy at all like them films make out. Safety and krazy coloured jumpsuits with condom hats come first! Shall get pics up soon but not today.
Yesterday Triona and Barry did a Lord of the Rings tour and the girls and I collected Aoife and Ray at the airport, dropped them to their hostel and left them to sleep while we 3 took a drive to Glenorchy. Its one of my favourite drives and not just because of the company. The lake and mountains and sun all made for a stunning view. If you come here take a drive down just to be amazed, same with the Crown road from Wanaka to Queenstown. I love when you see signs on roads here to take the scenic route because how much more beautiful can they be than what you see from any road! I love New Zealand alright. So then last night, after we got our ski gear for lessons today, we continued Fee’s birthday celebrations with a gorgeous Thai meal, no expense spared for our little Scandanavian, and then went on the rampage. Had a brilliant time drinking and podium dancing the night away. Poor Triona was a little worse for wear today for her snow boarding but we had a great time last night. I’ve never really taken to skiing before because when I’ve gone before its been with my sister Shelly’s family and if there’s one thing that’ll kill your confidence its your nieces and nephews looking at you and shaking their heads with shame at your inability to move on skis. Many the time I’ve heard the exasperated tone saying, “Just ski Teasi!”, I’d rather ram my ski up their bums at that stage! However, today I really did enjoy, yes Dee of course I fell, but it wasn’ till the end of the day and then it was a series of 3. The girls were a bit worried about my first fall actually. It looked worse than it was though. I was kinda getting into the swing of the turns and stuff. Quite good craic. My only problem with the day was the ski boots cut off circulation because they were too tight and the ski instructor was a muppet of epic proportions, otherwise though a brilliant day all round. Shelly ya can take me skiing any time now that I won’t embarrass the family. Though I’ll probably still stick to the baby slopes. 5 of us did the skiing with the other 3 (Triona, Barry and Ray) doing snow boarding. I’ll definitely stick to skiing. Me on any type of board is never a good idea but it looked really difficult. Tomorrow I’m thinking of doing the rafting. Spend like there’s no tomorrow, eh? Aoife and Ray are gonna do a bungy jump on Tuesday, same day Triona and Barry are leaving and when we may get on the road back to Christchurch. Have to give the car back on Friday. Right well best skiddaddle and get some grub. Hope ye are all well and that my sister ain’t baking too much in Chicargo. Read that 120 people have died from the heat in America. What’s going on?
