a weblog about girleens that travel. read of their adventures!

I have to say that while watching the coverage of the Assembly electing the new power-sharing Executive,of the DUP and Sinn Fein, that will sit at Stormont, and the evening of retrospective looks at the history of Northern Ireland, I felt truly elated that there’s now the chance for Northern Ireland to move forward. Seeing footage of Ian Paisley and Martin McGuinness, the First Minister and Deputy First Minister respectively, chatting and laughing together was quite surreal. Thankfully I never had to live through the major part of the Troubles, but the Northern Ireland question has been a factor of living on this island since I was born, so its just unreal to have two factions/political parties, on opposite ends of opinion, coming together to forge a future for their country together. I had a bit of an issue with there being no mention of John Hume or David Trimble on any of the programs I saw last night, Ian Paisley seemed to be the main focus of much coverage, but their major contributions will not be forgotten. Ahern may have done a few things to peeve me, and I’m not so sure that his party and he haven’t leaked those Tribunal documents in the hope that his popularity will arise again as it did in September, but he’s done Trojan work over the years up north, and you have to admire him for that. Paisley said something amusing on UTV last night about how this power-sharing came about, in that the only other alternative to a Stormont government, would be rule between London and Dublin. He believed that the cute heads in Dublin would run rings around London, but that Dublin never figured on the Ulstermen. That in the end is it. A united Ireland is a dream, but a peaceful Northern Ireland that will co-exist with the Republic and the British mainland, is a reality that will take hard work, but achievable. Its such a wonder to see it being grasped.

Thank you Dee! Maybe I’ll run one year. Though then I’d have to be eloquent, articulate, and have some stance or other on one or two things, with a platform, and wild hair. Hmm, sounds a lot like hard work and effort, so maybe not…
